The meeting was called to order at 5 pm

  • Minutes from the April 11th meeting were approved as written.
  • Mayor Evans reported that he had a pre-construction meeting with the general contractor for Little Hunting Creek Park.  Construction will begin very soon.  The city is planning to use this area for programs like Shakespeare in the Park, musical concerts, and other events.
  • Parks Update:
    • We expect that the design for the Harrods Creek Bridge abutments and applications for needed permits will be completed in the current fiscal year with the bid process and construction taking place in FY2023.
    • We have contracted with OHM Advisors for planning the Harrods Creek Park Green Trail improvements.  We expect to meet with OHM representatives and contractors soon to solicit bids for the work.
    • Volunteer work has begun to remove garlic mustard and poison hemlock in Harrods Creek Park.
    • The second wildflower walk had approximately 10 participants, who thoroughly enjoyed the event, including some young children.
    • Linda has been in contact with the president of the Beckham Bird Club.  Although their schedule for guided walks is full for the spring/summer, they would be interested in planning one or two walks during the fall migration season.
    • The Putney Pond Boardwalk proposal to the KHLCF Board is complete and will be submitted this week.  The board meeting is in July, so we will not have a response until later this summer.
  • Scout Update:
    • Lynn reported that the Scout Adventure Camp was a great success.  This program provides high-quality outdoor activities to disadvantaged and special needs children.  Committee member David Holmes volunteered at the event and echoed Lynn’s remarks about its success.
    • Eagle Scout candidates are very close to approvals for their projects.  They are on track to complete their projects over the summer.
  • There was a discussion about having a Parks & Recreation presence at the July 4th City Celebration.  We gave out copies of the park and bird brochures last year but wonder if a similar effort would be helpful this year.  Sallie Schneider offered to think about ways to publicize the parks and be in touch with committee volunteers for this effort.
  • The committee will not meet in June.
