Prospect Forestation Board Virtual Meeting Minutes
August 9, 2022, 2:00 pm via Webex

Present:   Connie Kuhn, Linda Knox, Sylvia Quaye, Herb Schulhafer, Andrea Hanlon, John Carter, Ron Cundiff, Doug Farnsley, Don Gibson, Linda Wardell

The minutes from July 12th were approved.

The Mayor was unavailable for an update.

The edging and mulching for the 20 most recently planted trees have been completed.

Andrea reviewed the quote for 3-gallon trees for the Arborfest giveaway.  A decision was made to order 45 trees instead of 50.  Tree guards will be provided with each tree to help protect the young trees from deer.  The tree species selected are Kousa Dogwood, Bracken’s Brown Magnolia, Jane Magnolia, Carolina Silverbell, and Trident Maple.  These are all midsized trees, and most are blooming.

There are also plans to again offer the canopy tree program.  Andrea will get an updated list of available trees.

Several problem trees were discussed.  Two large trees in Little Hunting Creek Park are of particular concern due to their being near the new park construction.  They have both been deemed hazardous, and removal is recommended.  Andrea will contact the LG&E Forester for their review.  She also noted that there are several Redbuds that have been impacted by construction and should be watched.

The failing Chokecherry on Hunting Creek Drive by Wythe Hill will be removed by City personnel.  The tree on Fox Harbor at Hunting Harbor will need to have ownership determined before any action is taken.  It was reported that the work needed at 7105 Fox Harbor has been only partially completed, and another letter should be sent to the owner.

Forestation will work with Parks and Recreation and the City to develop plans for future planting at Little Hunting Creek Park.  Linda Wardell reminded the group that earlier discussions had included adding a row of shrubs near the fence to act as a deterrent to keep young children away from 42 and help with noise.  The group will plan a joint meeting in the near future.

The next meeting will be on October 11th at 2 p.m. via WebEx.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:42 pm.

Respectfully submitted, Linda Knox
