Prospect Forestation Board Meeting Minutes
August 8, 2023, 12:30 pm

Present:  Lee Tucci, Linda Knox, Connie Kuhn, Sylvia Quaye, Herb Shulhafer, Mayor Farnsley, Ron Cundiff, Don Gibson, Linda Wardell

The minutes from the July 11 meeting were approved.

Mayor Farnsley said there were no updates on the Ordinance, but he will schedule a special meeting sometime after Aug. 21.  He would also like to review the remediation process and communication with residents.

Andrea started her report with an update on columnar red maples planted at the entry of Bridgepointe near the entrance.  There are four being impacted by shade from nearby trees.  The nearby trees should be pruned or the maples will start leaning towards the street where more light is available.   Bridgepoint Boulevard has 15 trees in the medians that require attention, and she expressed concern for the many Pin Oaks that will become a future issue.  A White Pine in the median at 7002 Bridgepointe Blvd. is recommended for removal.

She noted that the memorial trees were not being maintained, and asked if this was something that could be handled by Greenscapes.  She said that she would send a list to the Mayor and Ron.  It is likely that more money for tree maintenance and outside services will be needed over time.  Budget sources will need to be identified.

Ron has been able to remove the Dogwoods and Crabapples previous identified.

The tree on Turnbridge Place has been visited and determined to not be hazardous.

The Pin Oak at 6400 Innisbrook Drive has been deemed hazardous.  A motion was made and passed to send the owners a letter.  Lee mentioned that previous letters had encouraged owners to replant.  It was suggested to add information on Arborfest and the Canopy Program as ways the City can assist residents.

Previously requested trimming for right of way on 42 between Marina Drive and possibly as far as Ken Carla Drive has been completed by the State.

The trees for Arborfest were discussed and selections include:  Pawpaw, Eastern Redbud, Jane Magnolia, Kousa Dogwood and Sun Valley Red Maple.  Herb asked that Ron order the tree guards to be given away with the trees.  There will be 10 of each tree ordered.

Andrea will review public spaces for fall planting.  The planting will include the Paul Davis memorial, a Jordan Oak, in Little Hunting Creek Park.  Planting was delayed due to park construction.

Herb had a meeting with Hunting Creek Country Club.  They have 20 plus landscapers on staff and remove and trim trees regularly, and are very interested in replacing trees.  The board agree that they could have a free canopy, to be planted by their staff.  It was suggested that other local clubs or business receive the same offer, provided they were responsible for professional tree planting.

Connie has reached out to 10 residents who had received Canopy Trees.  Five owners responded and reported good results and pleased with program.

The next meeting will be September 12 at 2 pm via webex.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:45.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Knox
