Prospect Forestation Board Meeting Minutes
April 12, 2023, 2:00 pm

Present:  Lee Tucci, Linda Knox, Connie Kuhn, Herb Shulhafer, Andrea Hanlon, Mayor Farnsley, John Carter, Ron Cundiff, Linda Wardell

The minutes from the March 14 meeting were approved.

Mayor Farnsley discussed the problem trees and asked for a list of current cases requiring notification.  He was informed that both the suggested revisions for Ordinance 484, Series 2007, and the updated Tree Plan are ready for Council review.  He said the documents should go to John Carter for distribution.

The City received a call concerning a tree leaning at 7224 Fox Harbor with roots showing and leaning that needs to be looked at.

Andrea said the canopy trees are ready and should be planted later in the week.  The availability of tree guards was confirmed.

The Board reviewed the 3 problems Bradford Pears in The Landings deemed hazardous – 5603 Timber Ridge, 5605 Timber Ridge, and 6905 Timber Bluff, and voted that notice to remediate be sent.

Two trees on Fox Harbor Road were brought up, located at 7254 and 7251.  Both locations need to be visited and ownership determined.

A tree on New Bern Court in Bridgepointe was also brought up as a tree needing evaluation.

A memorial tree planned will not be planted at this time in Little Hunting Creek Park due to sidewalk construction.  The Jordan Street Oak will be planted in the open area on the exit from Hunting Creek.  Another tree as the memorial will be selected with plans for fall planting in the park.

Updates for the Tree List were reviewed and two trees are to be added to the prohibited portion of the list:  Cottonwood and Bradford Pear.  An updated list should be sent to John Carter.

A question on street trees where sidewalks are involved was raised and how to best provide guidance on tree selection.  Andrea said that Metro had information in their requirements and offered to send a link with the information.

The budget was discussed, and there is no request for EAB treatment funds.  Andrea will check how the ash trees are leafing out and whether treatment should be considered.

Volcano mulching on Putney Lane was noted.  Greenscapes should be directed to pull mulch away from tree trunks.  Tree ties on the orange trail can be removed as they are now too tight.  Other public space needs include the straightening of the Chinese Elm in Cowley Park.

The dead Holly on the Hunting Creek exit is still an issue, and most likely will be removed by City Maintenance.

Ron is getting quotes and samples for the memorial tree plaques.

Lee reminded everyone that the 2023-2024 Tree Plan required our signatures and would be available at the front desk.  He also said he would be sending our budget recommendations to John for Council consideration as the new budget is being developed.

Due to schedule conflicts, the next meet meeting will be on a Wednesday, rather than Tuesday.  The meeting is scheduled for May 10 at 2 p.m. via Webex.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:49 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Knox
